ROQUE CORDERO, UN MAESTRO SE NOS FUE
La música panameña se viste de luto con la pérdida del compositor y director Roque Cordero. El también pedagogo murió ayer a los 91 años, en la ciudad de Dayton, Ohio, tras una breve enfermedad que lo mantuvo en cama por varias semanas.
UN CAMINO DE PEQUEÑO Después de estudiar con Máximo Arrates Boza, Pedro Rebolledo, Herbert de Castro y Myron Schaeffer, recibe una beca para ir a los Estados Unidos en donde estudió composición con Ernst Krenek, en la Universidad de Hamline, y se graduó -suma cum laude- en 1947. También estudió dirección de orquesta con Dimitri Mitropoulos, Stanley Chapple y Leon Barzin.
DIRECTOR DE LA SINFONICA Su amor por la música lo llevó a distinguirse como profesor de composición de la Escuela de Música de la Universidad de Indiana. También dictó clases en la Universidad Estatal de Illinois, en donde recibió la más alta distinción. Entre las obras orquestales de Cordero se destacan Capricho interiorano, Tributo sinfónico a un centenario, Danza en forma de fuga y su Cuarta sinfonía panameña. También fue el autor de muchos libros que eran encargadas por universidades de Venezuela, Brasil, además de otras agrupaciones artísticas de los Estados Unidos. Entre los muchos honores que recibió se pueden mencionar la Beca Guggenheim, Profesor Honorario de la Universidad de Chile, Doctorado Honorario de la Universidad de Hamline y la Gran Cruz de Vasco Núñez de Balboa. Sus trabajos fueron merecedores de muchos premios internacionales, entre ellos por Primera Sinfonía (Detroit, 1947), Segunda Sinfonía (Caracas, 1957), Concierto para Violín y Orquesta (Premio Internacional del Disco Koussevitzky, 1974) y Tercer Cuarteto de Cuerdas (Costa Rica, 1977). Como director de orquesta actuó en Panamá, Colombia, Chile, Brasil, Argentina, Puerto Rico y los Estados Unidos. Muchas de sus obras han sido grabadas comercialmente por orquestas y grupos de cámara en los Estados Unidos. En el 2004, la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Panamá, bajo la dirección de Jorge Bradley, le rindió homenaje a través de un concierto, en donde se abarcó más de medio siglo de la obra creativa del compositor. Como parte del homenaje, el músico recibió también una placa conmemorativa, al entregársela y con suma emoción expresó su agradecimiento por tan grande honor.
Roque Cordero nació el 17 de agosto de 1917, en la ciudad de Panamá. A los 21 años de edad organiza la Orquesta de la Unión Musical, que se transformó en 1941 en Orquesta Nacional.
Cordero fue director del Instituto de Música y de la Sinfónica Nacional, y subdirector del Conservatorio Nacional. También se destacó en la dirección del Centro de Música Latinoamericana.
